Why I Write Fantasy Worlds – A Journey from Children’s Books to RPGs and Beyond
From my earliest days, storytelling felt like a natural part of me. I started with children’s books—not just reading them but creating them. I’d write the stories I wanted to read, ones with worlds and characters that felt as magical as anything I could imagine. I’d even illustrate them, bringing my ideas to life on every page. There was something powerful about the feeling of finishing a story and holding it in my hands, even if it was just for me.
As I got a bit older, poetry became my passion. I poured my thoughts into lines and rhymes, sometimes daydreaming in class and writing poems in the margins of my notebooks. I wanted to share my work, to see it resonate with others the way it did for me. But I was too young to join the local poetry competitions; they had age restrictions that kept me from the stage. Still, I’d go to the events, watch others recite their poems, and feel the thrill of being part of something bigger. When I finally grew old enough to participate, it felt like a rite of passage. But by then, another world had already called to me—role-playing games.
RPGs were where my love for storytelling truly took flight. Here, I was more than a poet or a writer; I was the master of worlds. I’d devote all my free time to building universes for my friends and me to explore. Every week, I’d create scrolls, maps, hidden objects, and story twists, each one crafted to immerse us in another world entirely. It wasn’t just a game—it was a journey we all took together, a chance to become heroes or legends, to laugh, to struggle, and to celebrate every small victory.
The joy of watching my friends fall into these worlds I’d built, to see them invest in the characters and quests, made every late night and early morning worth it. And those maps and hidden relics? They were like poetry too, woven with details and symbols only those who dared to play could uncover.
Now, those weekends, those stories, and all those hours spent bringing imaginary places to life have evolved into something I want to share with the world. Writing fantasy is my way of bringing those moments of magic to everyone, of opening up new worlds and inviting readers on the same journey I shared with my friends. Because fantasy isn’t just an escape; it’s a bridge to courage, hope, and imagination. It’s where we discover that even in the darkest forests or the deepest caverns, there’s always a spark of light to guide us.
So here I am, turning pages into portals, stories into spells, and inviting you along. I hope these worlds, especially the Downtown-verse, bring you the same joy, excitement, and sense of adventure that have always been my greatest companions. We may be meeting in far-off kingdoms or facing mythical prophecies, but each journey is one we’ll share, page by page.
Yours,
L.S. Franco
